I look at grammar and spelling. Punctuation errors is something that I also look at. I try my best to give my personal and professional opinions while keeping it fun at the same time. |
Direct and honest. Will try to be respectful. |
I will give the kind of review that I wish people gave me: rather detailed with emphasis on areas that need growth and areas that are pretty good already. And I'll review pretty much anything, whether a poem or an entire novel or anything in between. Admittedly, though, I do tend to be absent-minded, so it does happen that you might have to resend me the review request, but I promise I'll get around to it eventually. |
I have a review template that is only used for in depth reviews, usually those that are specifically requested. These will be as comprehensive as I can manage, including everything I have noticed in reading the piece. Most of my reviews, however, are more in the nature of reactions to the piece with brief notes on things I find particularly good and suggestions on dealing with any obvious flaws in the writing. |
I attempt a well-rounded review where I look at the item from a writer's and reader's perspective. I'll tell you what I liked and what I think could be strengthened. I like to think I'm a courteous and helpful reviewer. |
Mostly just bitchin'. If it's great writing I switch over to nit-picking but usually I'll find something to like. Please don't ask me to review poetry unless you're either James Fenton, Seamus Heaney or thick skinned as an elephant... I absolutely hate bad poetry. I'm the terror of the dactyls, I swat them with my hat. I'll have no truck with trochees, coz life's too short for that. Seriously I'm not qualified. I mean a metre is made up of feet? Like what? |
Brutally honest, but fair. I will give my impressions of the main points: Plot, character, setting, dialog. Then I will get into grammar, spelling, and typos. I will tell you what works, and what doesn't. As far as the star ratings go, I don't rely on them too much, but use them as a measure of an item's relative merit. Take it for what it's worth. Bottom line, my goal is to help the author improve their work. |
I'll give a quick summary of your item. Afterwards, I'll talk about your characters, any Spelling or Grammar issues, and perhaps suggest some things, like adding the item to a Genre that it would fit into. |
As a reviewer of your work, I will first look for identification in what you are presenting. When a reader can truly identify with the writer, emotion sets in and the story becomes a part of the reader as well as the writer. |
I try to be honest and positive. My Christian faith is an important background factor. I hate rating low but have a system that determines how I grade.
|
I will not give a very structured review; It will be just me typing out what I think about the piece, generally how well I think it accomplished its goals, what I think the goals are, and also generally a couple of notes on possible minor tweaks to the piece to make it slightly better. |
My review style is simple- I like to keep it short and sweet. I tend to use something I learned in college, which is called the "sandwich technique". I will tell you something positive, then include any constructive comments that I feel may be of use to you, then end with another positive. |
Minimalist. Focus on technical. I also look at how a work would fit into the traditional publishing landscape. I don't use a template. Warning: I am Australian, and so cultural differences may apply. |
I tend to be nice. I never review on subject or anything but more about how things are written and how easy it is to read. If you do that I'll always give a 5 star review. :) |
I try my best to read everything on Writing.com with great care. My reviews always include a first impression, my feelings about theme and structure and where appropriate, some thoughts about possible revisions.![]() |
I'm honest but constructive. I'll explain why I give the number of stars I give and what you could do to improve that. I do fix grammar as well as look at style, emotional triggers, characters, and other things like that. I'll get back to you with a full review in a couple of days or so after the request, depending on the length of the item. |
In a single word, thorough. I will turn your piece upside down, shake the change out of its pockets and look at even the most minute details. I can be technical but will do so when emphasizing a larger point about the piece as a whole. |
Generally long winded... I tend to hone in on aspects of a story that I feel the author underdeveloped and then encourage them to enhance them. My style is a bit chaotic, as I jump from element to element depending on how large they loom in my mind. I may one day employ a template,to cover plot, theme, characters, settings, etc.. but for now I just comment on the parts of the story I feel compelled to address. Because my own spelling and grammar is atrocious, I leave those suggestions to your spellcheck and the more technical reviewers kind enough to visit your work. |
